Running a Booth

If you’re wishing to help a shelter or rescue gain publicity, try attending events that are open to the public. The goal of these events is to make the shelter seem as inviting and open as possible, the more friendly you are to the public, the greater your chances of getting dogs adopted into new homes.

Setting up a booth for the rescue is a great idea. Make sure to have plenty of fliers to hand out that describe what the rescue is all about. It’s also a good idea to have pictures of current adopt-ables available along with a way to contact the rescue if a particular dog piques someone’s interest. If the rescue requires house checks, or otherwise doesn’t do on-the-spot adoptions, a contact telephone number as well as directions on how to get to the rescue may help maintain the possible adopter’s interest.

Other things such as treats for passing dog owners, candy for those with children, and a raffle basket, will coerce people over to your booth as well. Be as warm and friendly as possible: the more upbeat you are, the more people will think that rescue and shelters are wonderful places to get future pets.

These events typically include demonstrations by working canines, and fun games for dog owners.

However, there will be plenty of time for looking through booths and meeting fellow rescue organizations. While attendees are walking about, try walking a dog in need of adoption around as you look at booths yourself. This will give people a look at the dog as it is in action, the better behaved and friendly the dog, the easier it will be to grab people’s attention. Try bringing lots of treats with you and ask the dog to perform tricks in public.

There will most likely be lots of people with dogs at the event, so its important that your adoptable stands out from the crowd, otherwise people may think that the dog at your feet has already found it’s home with you. A scarf around the dogs neck is a good distinguishing marker. Try getting a bright colored scarf and ironing on an “adopt me” logo.

Another good way to have your adoptable stand out is to make an announcement about your dog up front and center. This will be sure to grab attention!
