An important part of rescuing animals is to get the word out as much as possible. The more friendly, open, and caring you are, the better image you give for the animals under your care.
Some ways to do this include:
Host your own website with pictures of the dogs available and short blurbs about the dogs’ personality- what makes that dog special compared to the others? What kind of family will that dog fit in with best?
Post your animals on popular sites dedicated to animal adoptions, awareness, and fun. Some good ones: www.dogster.com, www.petfinder.com, or for the more urgent ones www.dogsindanger.com.
Attend as many events as possible. Get your dog out and about with an “adopt me” sign on them- walk them around town, to parks or the beach. Any dog-friendly area where people go will help. Go to any available animal events held by nearby animal rescues; lots of organizations may be willing to help you find an adoptive home.
You can also post signs up around town with a picture and short, friendly blurb about the animal in need. Make the sign colorful, fun, and eye catching. Ask pet stores that don’t sell dogs themselves to post your sign up in their store for you.
Another good resource is promoting your animal in a newspaper or magazine article. Make sure you give them the important facts about your animal, and also try to ensure they get your story as accurate as possible.
Often these things will come hand in hand - we got in the local newspaper by attending a local animal rescue event: The Eureka Reporter.
