Meg’s regimen

Meet Meg.

Meg is an adorable German Shorthaired Pointer/Cattle dog mix. She’s friendly, excitable, and willing to please; definitely the kind of dog who’d love to be your jogging buddy.

However, at seven years old, Meg has put on some extra pounds. These pounds mean a lot to Meg, as they put extra stress on her bones and joints, may significantly shorten her lifespan, and recently have been hurting her chances of adoption.

Which is why the proper exercise plan and diet are an essential part of her daily life. With low calorie food, smaller portions, and fewer treats accompanied by play and walks, Meg will become both thin and muscular.

We start with light exercise then gradually increase the intensity. This way she can build her stamina to the point where we want it.

You can increase the intensity in a number of ways including going farther, faster, or up an incline. Always watch for signs of stress. Excessive panting, foaming, or slowing down may mean that you have pushed them a bit too hard too fast.

If they seem to be getting tuckered out, take breaks. If you plan on going far enough it may be a good idea to bring water along with you.

Walks are good times to practice training commands, so bring along plenty of treats as well. You’ll want to limit treats to those that are low calorie and small in size, some good ones are: carrots, banana and apple slices.

The biggest treat of all? The downhill portion!
