Jaeger Himself

Jaeger was born in California with the sole purpose to become a fine hunting dog. Both of his parents worked in the field, and he himself was trained to point and retrieve early on. He is a German Shorthaired Pointer, a breed renowned for their goofy and friendly nature, trainability, high energy in the field, and yet lounge partner when at home. And this is exactly how Jaeger is. In fact, though he runs around like a mad man at the park, it is sometimes difficult to persuade him out of bed in the morning.
Luckily for us, he is very food-motivated. There isn’t a jacket pocket left un-investigated at the dog park when Jaeger is around. If you made the mistake of bringing any tid-bits or crumbs along, Jaeger will sit and drool all over himself looking at you as if he’d been starving. As you can well imagine, this makes positive reinforcement methods quite easy for us.
Jaeger has been trained to do a variety of tricks for his beloved food. This includes the “bang” trick, where you mock “shoot” and say “bang” and the dog falls over to play dead. It typically takes a few shots though, while Jaeger is rolling around until you finally convince him to sit still.
Though hunter by purpose, Jaeger’s only trade is that of companion. His happy-go-lucky personality and creative ways of finding something fun is what we try to mimic when working with shelter dogs. Making him our captain was only second nature for us.
